Trip to Mexico

Visitax

Posted on 06/28/2024

You may have heard of Visitax if you have traveled to Mexico recently, or are getting ready to
soon. This tax was implemented in April of 2021 by the state of Quintana Roo as a tourism tax
to help reactivate the tourist sector in Mexico after the height of the Covid pandemic in 2020.
This tax is different from the Mexico Tourism Tax (which is tied to airline tickets) and the
Environmental Tax (which is tied to most all-inclusive resorts). Visitax is required to be paid by
ALL tourists entering Mexico, regardless of age or length of stay - this includes cruise guests
stopping in a city for a day. The only current exemption is for travelers entering through the
southern border at Belize. Currently, there is not a financial penalty for not paying the fee, but
the government has said that they will be announcing one later this year. Not paying will add
observations to your passport that will affect future travels to Mexico.
As of February 2024, the cost for Visitax is 271mxn (about $16) per person when paid on the
Mexican government’s website, and can be paid before or during your trip. Currently, the only
verified ways to pay this are through the Government of Mexico’s website and TravelKore, any
other website that offers an option to pay Visitax online is not verified and unsafe. Do not pay on
any website besides the Government of Mexico or TravelKore. There are kiosks inside of
Cancun International Airport that offer payment of Visitax when entering or leaving the country.
Only use the kiosks, if they are operating; do not scan any other QR codes or go to any other
websites that may be advertised at the airport, there is knowledge of false websites and
companies that are not verified to pay the Visitax.
The information you will need in order to pay your Visitax is:
- Full names of everyone traveling in the group
- The number of people traveling in the group
- Passport numbers of everyone traveling in the group
- Date of the group’s departure from Mexico
You will not be asked to scan your passport - if a website is requesting that, it is not a verified
website and you should not use it.
Visitax is a simple, inexpensive tax that helps the Mexican tourism industry so that you can keep
visiting the beautiful country for years to come!
